Questions, answered

What to know before you order a table you have not sat at yet. Anything else, write to the workshop.

How long does a made-to-measure table take?

Most tables leave the workshop six to eight weeks after you order: the boards are chosen and matched, the top is glued up and left to settle, then shaped, sanded and finished. We tell you the week your table will be ready when we confirm the order.

And a table from stock?

The tables, benches and desk in our shop are made ahead in the sizes listed and leave the workshop within five working days. Delivery within Denmark takes one to three working days more.

Which woods do you use?

Seven: oak, smoked oak, ash, beech, elm, cherry and walnut, all solid and air-dried for at least a year before we cut them. Oak is the everyday choice, ash and beech the palest, elm the wildest grain, cherry and walnut the darkest and the dearest. Write to us and we post you offcuts of any three.

Which finish should I choose?

Oil and hardwax oil leave the table looking and feeling like wood, and a mark can be sanded out and re-oiled at home; hardwax oil shrugs off water and wine a little better. Soap keeps a pale wood pale and velvety but wants washing every week or two. Matt lacquer needs nothing from you, but a deep scratch needs us. Most of our customers choose hardwax oil.

Why can't I have every finish on every wood?

Some do not suit each other. White oil and soap leave a grey bloom in the open pores of dark woods, cherry blotches under a stain, and walnut and smoked oak are dark already. The configurator greys out a combination we do not make and says why.

What happens above 2.6 metres?

A table longer than 2.6 metres gets a centre leg under the middle of the top. It is a workshop requirement, not a choice you need to make, and it is included in the price.

Leaves in the middle or at the ends?

In the middle, the top parts on wooden runners and the leaf drops in, cut from the same boards so the grain runs on. At the ends, the leaves hook on with pull-out slides and the top never parts. Either way the leaves need a wooden trestle base, whose runners carry them.

How is a table delivered?

Two of us bring it in, fit the base and set it level. Delivery in Denmark costs 495 kr and is free on orders over 10,000 kr. We do not deliver outside Denmark.

Can I visit the workshop?

Yes. The showroom in the old dairy outside Træholt is open Thursday and Friday 10 to 17 and Saturday 10 to 14, with tables in every wood and finish to sit at. Coming from far? Write first, and we make sure the table you want to see is there.

What if the table I need is not in the configurator?

The configurator holds what the workshop makes without a conversation: 1.8 to 3.2 metres long and 0.8 to 1.2 metres wide. For anything else, a round table included, choose 'Something else' on the row that does not fit, or describe the table in your own words, and we answer within two working days.

Solid-wood tables, made to the centimetre in a workshop in Jutland.

Bordværkstedet is a small table workshop in an old dairy outside Træholt, Jutland, founded in 2009. We make dining tables, benches and desks in seven solid woods, by hand, to the size you need. Bordværkstedet is a demonstration store built on Specify. Its founders, workshop, tables and prices are invented: nothing ordered here is made or delivered.
